Using a Graphic Designer to Make You Money

My family and I are having a nice new house built for us out on the other side of town but we’ve sold our old house already and are now living with my in-laws. So far it’s a nice experience for everyone, most of all for my four-year-old daughter who can now spend endless hours prizing treats and iPad games from her Grandma.
You have a new product but who wants to buy it? You could dress it up with a nicely designed logo, roll it out and hope for the best but what would happen next? Casting a new product or service out into the marketplace might feel like a lottery but it doesn’t have to be that way.
As a business owner with a web presence, you’ve probably heard about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) by now. As a local business with a physical location, maybe you’ve heard about “local SEO” or that you should be optimized for local search. Maybe you’ve heard about organic SEO and things just got a little confusing from there.
It’s a request we hear very often whether it be on your website, a business card or an advertisement. We understand, you want your brand to stand out and be memorable – for it to shout out to your clients “this is who we are”.
So, Jesse has been hounding me to write a bit about User Experience (UX to some) for quite a while and I was struggling with where to begin with it. It’s a huge, vast, (and quite honestly at this point) subjective concept and for the longest time I just didn’t know where to begin.
I have been in the design industry for a LONG time and have recently come to the realization that the term ‘branding’ has to be one of the most misunderstood words in the entire history of misunderstood words. Well… maybe not, but in the small business world – maybe. Most small business owners equate branding to a logo, a set of colours and a consistent image across all of your design materials. I thought so too!
I distinctly remember my very first business card. I was a summer student at a not-for-profit and my very first task was to make and print my own business cards. They were printed on the office desktop printer on perforated business card paper. I remember tearing each one off into a neat little stack.
